Ruffin began playing the pipes at age thirteen when his family moved to Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. There he met a professor at the college who initiated one of the first pipe bands in the state.
In 1969 Ruffin was fortunate enough to attend the College of Piping School in Thousand Islands, Canada where he met
and studied with Seumas MacNeill. The following year he was invited to study with Seumas at the College of Piping in Scotland. Later, in 1973, Ruffin returned to Scotland, and furthered his studies with champion piper, Donald Macpherson.
Then, on into the early 1980’s, Ruffin studied with both John McFadyen and Jim McIntosh. Pipe Bands with whom Ruffin has played include; Clan Cameron, North Carolina State, Deep River, and currently with Grandfather Mountain Highlanders.
Ruffin has won numerous awards and competitions as an Amateur I Piper. He also teaches piping at his home in Alamance County.
